Display manufacturers have been shifting their focus over the past decade. Each generation of smartphone had ever higher screen resolutions, and then we reached 4K and we stopped caring so much. All new smartphones now have great displays. Then TVs started to embrace 4K and soon we’ll be talking about 8K, but even there interest is diminishing. We just expect great TVs. So where is the next area of focus? Virtual reality displays it seems.
If you strap yourself into an Oculus Rift today your eyes will be looking at two 1080 x 1200 OLED panels (PlayStation VR is 960 x 1080). There’s also adjustable lenses in there to widen the field of view while magnifying the image. It works well enough, but the lenses have the negative side effect of making dots visible to your eyes on the displays, which can break the immersion somewhat.
